According to IDG’s 2020 State of the CIO Report, 95% of Chief Information Officers said that they have been expected to act beyond traditional IT responsibilities.
Several CIOs and IT Leaders tend to focus on the technology. But the technology has no use if it does not prowide the organisation with the desired added value. The CIO shall focus on the outcome at the first place and choose the technology accordingly to that.
The common education requirements for a CIO include information technology, computer science, software engineering, information systems or a related field. There are only a few, who have business administration, sales, marketing, communication, or finance backgrounds.
Focusing more on those skills and constantly seeking for sales opportunities like entrepreneurs do, and not positioning themselves as administrators would help developing and communicating the benefits the IT services as added values to the business.
